Lloyd Eugene "L.E." Schnitzer

Lloyd Eugene "L.E." Schnitzer
November 16, 1944 ~ February 4, 2021

Lloyd Eugene (L.E.) Schnitzer, age 76, passed away at his home in Tucson, AZ, on February 4, 2021.

L.E. was born on November 16, 1944, to Maxine Sutton (Hayes) Schnitzer and Lloyd Johnson Schnitzer in Cherokee, OK. His family moved to Bartlesville, OK, in late 1946, and L.E. graduated from College High School in Bartlesville in 1963. He enjoyed playing basketball in high school, and he also played football and the trumpet during his school age years. L.E. then attended Oklahoma State University, where he walked on to the OSU Cowboys basketball team for several games. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity while attending Oklahoma State. He also attended Central State University and the University of Oklahoma School of Radiologic Technology, where he received the Outstanding Student Award in 1969.

Some of L.E.'s early career endeavors included working at Winnipeg General Hospital with Dr. Ross E. Brown, whom he worked closely with for many years. He was also a Chief Sonographer at the University of Oklahoma Medical Center, Chief Sonographer at Beth Israel Medical Center, and served as a research assistant at MIT. He became a Clinical Instructor of Ultrasound/Radiology at the University of Colorado Medical Center and manager at Unirad Corporation in Denver, CO, prior to moving to Marshalltown, IA, in 1974, where he became the director of the newly-established Department of Ultrasound at Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center. He spent 28 years at MMSC prior to moving to Arizona in 2002. He spent some time traveling and consulting, setting up new sonography equipment and training staff on its use until accepting a position at Banner Del Webb hospital in Sun City West, AZ, in 2004. He worked as a sonographer at Banner Del Webb until his retirement in late 2012.

During his extensive career, he was affiliated with the AIUM (American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine), from which he received the Pioneer Award in 1988. He was co-founder of the SDMS (Society for Diagnostic Medical Sonography – originally ASUTS) in 1969 and author of its bylaws and constitution in 1971. He served as president-elect of the SDMS from 1970-1972. He also served as chairman of the ARDMS (American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography) from 1979-1981. Some of the examination questions on the early ARDMS examination given to sonographers were written by him. He was one of the few sonographers registered in seven separate registries, which he achieved in 1975, allowing him to perform ultrasound techniques in seven unique regions of the body. In 1976, he co-founded the Iowa Society of Ultrasound. He was the first sonographer to ever record a fetal heart on film and presented this to a standing-room-only crowd at an AIUM conference in the early 1970's. Throughout his career, he traveled the United States and Europe, presenting his research papers and lectures in places such as Paris, Frankfurt, Sweden, San Francisco, San Diego, Lake Tahoe, Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico.

Following his move to Marshalltown, IA, he met Amy Brandt (Moeller) at MMSC, whom he later married in 1978. Together they had two children, Brianne Leigh in 1980 and Guy Steven in 1984. They lived on an acreage outside of Marshalltown with their children until they divorced in 1994. L.E. remained on this acreage until 2001, where he cared for his horses and pets and enjoyed sitting on his Adirondack chair in front of his house, smoking one of his beloved pipes or cigars. It was on this acreage where he worked tirelessly in the large front yard with Brianne and Guy, throwing a softball or baseball back and forth with them or practicing golf shots with them to help perfect the '100 yards and in' distance.

L.E. enjoyed team roping and spent a lot of his spare time in the 1970's and early 1980's roping with his trusty horse, Worry. He later acquired another horse named Thorpe, whom he also roped with. He spent a lot of time with Perry Moore and Sid Roseland, both from Marshalltown, who also enjoyed this pastime. L.E. was a member of Elmwood Country Club while he resided in Marshalltown and spent every Wednesday and Saturday afternoon golfing with friends. He taught Brianne and Guy how to play golf while they were young, and the three of them enjoyed many rounds of golf together all over the country, playing courses in Iowa, Oklahoma, and Arizona. In his later years, L.E. purchased three of his four grandchildren's first sets of golf clubs first lessons, and he watched with pride as they learned to play as well. L.E. was a licensed pilot and logged many flight hours in his 30's and early 40's. He enjoyed watching hockey and purchased season tickets to the Phoenix Coyotes from 2005-2011. During these years, he was able to meet many of the players and their families and obtained many autographed memorabilia from them, including hockey sticks and jerseys, which he treasured.

L.E. was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Maxine. He is survived by his children, daughter Brianne (Matt) Fink of Ankeny, IA, and their children Corinne van Nieuwkerk, Chase Stracke, Caylee Fink and Matthew Fink, and son Guy (Theresa) Schnitzer of Marana, AZ, and their fur-babies (his grand-puppies), Dakota and Denali. He is also survived by his younger sister, Barbara Aderton, of Bartlesville, OK, two nieces, two nephews, and their spouses and children.
