Isabelle Rushing

October 14, 1912 ~ August 24, 2003

Memorial services will be held Saturday, Sept. 13, at 11:00 a.m., at First Presbyterian Church, for Isabelle Rushing who died August 24, 2003, in Bakersfield.

Isabelle was born October 14, 1912, in McAlester, Oklahoma, where she went to school until going to college. She attended Southeastern State College where she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree. After graduating, Isabelle returned to McAlester where she taught until entering the U. S. Women's Army Corp., 1945.

She received the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with two bronze starts, a W. A. A. C. Service Ribbon, three overseas service bars, a Good Conduct Medal and a Meritorious Unit Award. After being discharged from the Army, she moved to California to attend school at the University of Southern California, where she received her Master's Degree in Education. From USC, she moved to Pixley and taught one year before moving to Bakersfield, teaching elementary school for the Bakersfield City School District until her retirement in 1976.

Isabelle was a 50-year plus member of the First Presbyterian Church of Bakersfield. She had been active in the Livingston Guild at the church and was also a member of the California Retired Teacher's Association. She was an avid reader and loved to travel, touring most of Europe and returning many times to Italy.

Isabelle was preceded in death by her parents, Tup and Ora Rushing, and her only sister, Frances Rushing Phillipi. She is survived by her neighbor, Geraldine Sproul and her family of guests and caregivers at "The Gables." The loving care given Isabelle by Esther, Andrea, Julia, Lucy, Irma and Tami made her last years happy and is deeply appreciated. Many thanks to Jean Schamblin for seeing the need for "The Gables" which was opened just two months before Isabelle needed such a home.

Memorial donations may be made to Hoffmann Hospice, 5300 California Ave., Suite I, Bakersfield, CA 93309
