Gary Neil Reed

August 27, 1941 ~ February 12, 2021

Gary Neil Reed, 79, of Thackerville passed away on Friday, February 12, 2021 in Gainesville, Texas. Born August 27, 1941 in Cooke County, Texas, he was the son of Chester Byron and Era Lee Roberts Reed.

Gary moved to Oklahoma in 1955 and made Thackerville his home. He had a compassionate spirit for his hometown. Gary served as Mayor, City Councilman, and Chief of Police. He worked on countless projects to help improve Thackerville. Gary had a heart as pure as gold and loved to help others, especially children. He worked for Thackerville Public Schools in the maintenance department and as a bus driver.

Gary loved being outdoors. Time spent on Red River fishing, camping, cooking, and telling stories was cherished. King of Noodling was a title Gary wore proudly. If you needed Gary, he could be found at the Front Porch Café every morning watching “His Town” wake up. Although he had many interests, nothing topped spending time with his family and friends.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Hunter Reed Watson; three sisters, Virginia Kretzchmar, Linda Reed, and Tim Reed.

Survivors include his daughter, Angie Melton and husband David; son, Jack Reed; five brothers, Gilbert Reed, Lonnie Reed, Steven Reed, Anthony Reed, and Johnny Reed; sister, Sherry Milam; three grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.

A memorial service will be held in the near future. Please be ready to share some stories. The family would love to hear them.
