While attending Antioch Baptist Church, he met ArmaLene Oakley who was active in the junior choir. Upon graduating high school, Vernell and ArmaLene were married on July 3, 1960. From this union they were blessed with two children and 60-years of marriage.

Being true entrepreneurs, the couple made an outstanding life here in Muskogee, and have been honored with distinguished awards from many clubs and organizations.

Vernell was a beloved member in good standing with Rayfield Baptist Church, and enjoyed all aspects of the services. He was a life member of Kappa Alpha Phi Fraternity; and served as president of the Muskogee Langston Alumni. He was an avid golfer and a member of Muskogee Country Club.
