Serena Sue Preuss

Serena Sue Preuss
Feb. 29, 1944 ~ July 4, 2015

Memorial service for Serena Sue Preuss, 71, will be noon Saturday, July 11, 2015, at University Place Christian Church. Service is under the direction of Brown-Cummings Funeral Home.

Sue Preuss was born in Checotah, Okla., to Ed and Marie Eckford on Feb. 29, 1944. They moved to Enid when she was five. She passed away Saturday, July 4, 2015, at St. Mary's Regional Medical Center in Enid, Okla.

She attended Carver Elementary School, Booker T. Washington High School, and graduated from Enid High School in 1962.

She attended business school in Oklahoma City and Northwestern OSU.

The second oldest child, Sue, had three sisters and two brothers.

When their parents both died at a young age, Sue took the major responsibility for rearing her younger brothers and sisters, as well as her own two sons.

Sue worked for Sears in Enid for 17 years before joining the staff at Integris Bass Baptist Health Center in 1984, as director of housekeeping.

Her responsibilities expanded when the hospital acquired the Integris Bass Pavilion and Meadowlake Hospital. Sue eventually retired from Integris.

Baptized at Grayson Missionary Baptist Church at the age of 10, Sue was later an active member of Progressive Baptist Church until joining University Place Christian Church in 1989. At University Place, she taught the Adam and Eve childrens Sunday school class, as well as servicing in such leadership positions as chairperson of membership, evangelism, personnel and the diaconate.

For years, she planned and led the preparation of the Monday Mamre Meal, a weekly event hosted by the church for anyone needing a healthy meal and fellowship.

In 1996, she was awarded the congregation's Salt Shaker Award for outstanding lay leadership.

In addition to her church work, she also served on the community boards for Meadows Point Apartments, Hospice Circle of Love, and The Salvation Army.

Because of failing health due to kidney disease, Sue's activities were curtailed during the last few years.

She recently had moved to Trinity Assisted Living at The Commons.

She is survived by two husbands, Harold Cole and Richard Preuss of Enid; two sons, Maury Cole and wife Iynna of San Diego, Calif., and Wade Cole of Toronto, Canada; two sisters, Margaret Webb of Tulsa, and Dianna Lynn Eckford of San Jose, Calif.; one brother, Johnny Eckford of Lansing, Mich.; five grandchildren, Deeann Todd, Serena Cole, Isaiah Cole, Sanaa Cole and Moorea Cole of San Diego, Calif.; five great-grandchildren; a loving niece, but more like a daughter, Christina Judge; and a host of nieces and nephews and other relatives.

Memorials may be made in her honor to University Place Christian Church, with Brown-Cummings serving as custodian of funds.

Condolences can be made to the family at www.brown-cummings.com.
