Mavis Rose Powell
January 9, 1926 ~ June 6, 2012 (age 86)

Mavis Rose Powell, 86, passed away Wednesday, June 6, 2012 at her home in Norman, OK.

Mavis was born on the family farm in Dalhart, TX on January 9, 1926. She entered Abilene Christian College at the age of 16 and received her teaching certificate at age 18. She taught school in a one room country schoolhouse near Dalhart. During this time she met her future husband Dwayne Powell who was stationed at the Dalhart Air Force Base. Upon his return from Guam at the end of WWII, they were married and moved to Norman. They soon opened “Deeʼs Student Shop” on the OU Campus Corner, retiring after 47 years in 1995. Mavis will be deeply missed by all those who experienced her wonderful hospitality and generosity.

Mavis is survived by her loving husband of 66 years, Dwayne “Dee” Powell, her three children, Ann McClellan (Van), Jane Cain (Mark), Jim Powell (Anne), six grandchildren who were the joy of her life, Kate McClellan, Jennifer McClellan, Matthew Cain (Molly), Emily Cain, Chris Powell, Adrienne Powell and two great-grand-daughters, Libby and Marie Cain. She is also survived by her brother Jim Rose, sister Bonnie McKie, brother-in-law Harold Powell and their children.

The family will have a private celebration of her life. 

 Arrangements for Mavis and her family were placed in the care of the Vice Family at the Havenbrook Funeral Home.
