Thank You For Your Service!

John Addison Pennel, Jr.

February 18, 1928 ~ February 4, 2005

A memorial service for John Addison Pennel, Jr. will be held at Fairfax School Auditorium (1500 S. Fairfax Rd.) on Friday, February 11, 2005, at 6:30 p.m.

John was born in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma on February 18, 1928, and married his high school sweetheart, Ruby, in 1946.

John served in the United States Navy from 1946 to 1949.

In 1950, John and Ruby moved to Kern County with their 2 older sons, Jim and Bill, and in 1951, their youngest son, Steve, was born.

After working a couple of jobs, John settled in at Golden Empire Transit where he drove a bus for 27 years, until he retired in 1981.

In 1953, John and Ruby bought their little house at the end of Shirley Lane with an acre of yard for their boys, where at anytime you might see 4 or 5 tents and a dozen or more sleeping bags. John always felt that if the kids were kept busy they would be kept out of trouble, so, together with Bob Stotler, Bob Baker, Alex Vasquez, and others, John helped to form the Fairfax JBA baseball league which is still active today. John and Ruby were Cub Scout leaders for many years, mentoring many young boys. The little house at the end of Shirley Lane was a favorite place for many of the kids to go play, eat, or just talk to someone who would listen. Their great grandchildren still go there today.

John was preceded in death by his father, John Addison, Sr.; his sister, Fannie Chapman; his mother, Serena Pennel; and his grandson, Addison Pennel.

John is survived by his wife of 58 years, Ruby; son, Jim and wife, Angela; son, Bill and wife, Debbie; son, Steve and wife, Linda; 5 granddaughters; 4 grandsons; 15 very special great grandchildren; and many, many more who he was Papa John to.

Our PAPA JOHN T will be missed beyond words
