Harold Eugene Newland

Harold Eugene Newland
February 24, 1932 - May 18, 2015

Harold Eugene Newland, resident of Ponca City, passed Monday, May 18, 2015 at the Ponca City Medical Center. He was 83 years of age.

Harold was born February 24, 1932 in Blackwell, the son of C.M. Newland and Berniece (Tate) Newland. He was a 1950 graduate of Blackwell High School. He completed college at Oklahoma University in 1957 with a business degree but because of military service did not participate in commencement exercises. After 50 years he was recognized by the University of Oklahoma in commencement exercises in 2007.

Harold proudly served his country 30 years in the United States Navy as a career counselor and before his retirement from the Navy in 1988. He was Admiral appointed to Senior Grade E9 on the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial in Pearl Harbor.

He was married to Julia Irene Gates on February 27, 1953 in Blackwell. To this union were born four children, Mike, Pat, Rory and Dan. He was married to Barbara Jean Ford on March 12, 1986 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Harold was a former Southern Baptist Minister and proud member of the Northern Cherokee Tribe where he was a gourd dancer. His enjoyments were his kids and grandkids, being around young people, old cars and in recent years enjoyed working at Pioneer Vo-Tech in the T & I program as an auto mechanic.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara, of the home; three children, Pat Newland of Garland, Texas, Rory Newland and wife Angela, of Ponca City, and Dan Newland and wife Becka, of Sachse, Texas; a granddaughter he helped raise, Dee Ann LaBrilla of Frisco, Texas; his step-children Vickie Lynn Garcia and husband Carlos, of St. George, Utah, Jay Dewayne Troup of Oak Harbor, Washington, Dara Lee Dobbins and husband Jim, of San Diego, California, Cherry Ann Gannon and husband Rob, of Columbia, Missouri, Jacalin Blue of Wilcox, Arizona and James Everett Troup Jr. of Oak Harbor, Washington and Rena Jean Taylor and companion Tony Leal; also leaving a heritage to a total of 78 grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Mike Newland, one infant daughter, Karen Sue Troup; two sisters, Helen Newland and Shirley Love.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 23, 2015 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 2408 East Hartford, Ponca City with Bishop Skip Jump presiding.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tennessee 38105.
