Stephen Oscar Moore

Jan. 24, 1921 ~ Aug. 22, 2007

Longtime Enid resident Stephen Oscar Moore, 86, died Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2007, in Fayette County, Ga. A memorial service was held Friday, Aug. 24, 2007, at Carmichael-Hemperly Funeral Home, Peachtree City, Ga., with interment in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens, College Park, Ga.

Stephen was born Jan. 24, 1921, in Comanche County, Kan., to Stephen Osgood and Mertie Lewis Moore.

Stephen met the love of his life, Ruby Louise Haskins, in Billings. During their courtship, World War II broke out and Stephen joined the U.S. Army Air Corps. He flew a full complement of missions in the European Theater as a radioman and gunner. It was the thought of returning home to Ruby that buoyed his spirits and helped him bravely complete his service to his country. He returned from overseas and married Ruby while on leave. They were stationed in various locations in Washington and California until his honorable discharge.

Stephen and Ruby returned to Oklahoma after the war and resided in Enid. He went to work for Day Ford Motor Co. and worked there for more than 30 years until he retired as General Manager in 1986. He retired to spend more time with Ruby, work on his golf game, and watch the St. Louis Cardinals. Most days Stephen could be found walking the links at University Lake Golf Course with his friends. He twice achieved what most golfers only dream of a hole in one and both after the age of 70.

Last fall, Stephen and Ruby left their beloved hometown of Enid and moved to Fayetteville, Ga., to be closer to their son and daughter-in-law. In this past year, Stephen and Ruby shared holidays, birthdays, and anniversaries with their family, making wonderful memories that they all look fondly on and are so blessed to have been able to share.

One of last great, treasured, memories is of Stephen and Ruby celebrating their 62nd wedding anniversary in March surrounded by friends and family. The unwavering devotion Stephen felt for Ruby, and she for him, serves as a beautiful reminder as to what the most important things in life are. Stephen never longed for lifes extravagances and considered his greatest achievements in life to be a loving husband, father and grandfather. The light of his life was granddaughter, Jennifer, who taught Grandpapa how to play Barbie dolls and many other important games. A simple, unassuming gentleman, Stephen never met a stranger and earned the respect of all who knew him.

Preceding him in death are his parents, Stephen and Mertie, and brothers James and George.

Stephen is survived by his loving and beautiful wife of 62 years, Ruby; son, Gary Moore and wife Linda of Fayetteville, Ga.; granddaughter, Jennifer Moore McMenamin and husband Steve of Shreveport, La.; sister, Lois Tate of St. Joseph, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews.
