Hennessey, OK — HENNESSEY, Okla. — Service for Thomas Jay Mitchell of Hennessey will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 1, 2013, at First Christian Church of Hennessey, officiated by Rev. Mickey Moery, under the direction of Cordry-Gritz Funeral Home, Hennessey.

Tommy was born Friday the 13th of July, 1945, to Fred and Ann Mitchell of Hennessey. He passed away peacefully on Monday, July 29, 2013, at the age of 68.

Tommy was raised in Hennessey, where he participated in Boy Scouts, FFA, was president of Teen Town, and helped his family raise Shetland ponies.

He graduated from Hennessey High School in 1963. He furthered his education at Okmulgee Tech, where he became an electrical technician.

Upon completing school, he owned and operated Mitchell Electric. He later went to work for Pillsbury and then Farmland in Enid. In the early ’80s, he went to work as an electrician and retired as an instrument technician from Conoco with over 20 years of service.

Tommy enjoyed hunting, fishing, flying his power parachute, snow skiing, country western dancing, traveling and spending time with his grandchildren.

Tommy is survived by his son, Travis and wife Debbie Mitchell of Okarche; two daughters, Tava and husband Mark Batt of Dover, and Timberly and husband Jeff Jech of Hennessey; five grandchildren, Ian Mitchell, Kyle and Kassidy Batt, Jay and Taryn Jech; one brother, Jerry and wife Peggie Mitchell of Duncan, Okla.; one sister, Janis and husband Ralph Schultz of Weatherford, Texas; several cousins, nieces, nephews, and many lifelong friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Ann Mitchell of Hennessey, and one brother, Don Mitchell of California.

In Lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Tommy’s name to Hennessey Care Center (remodeling fund) or The HHS Class of 1963 (reunion fund).

Cordry-Gritz funeral home will be serving as custodian of the funds.

Viewing and visitation with the family will be from 6-8 p.m. today, July 31, 2013, at Cordry-Gritz Funeral Home, Hennessey.
