After his discharge, James continued working as a Diesel Mechanic. He was united in marriage to Lois F. Martin on December 29, 1984 in Woodward, Oklahoma. They made their home in Woodward. James worked in Fairview, Shattuck, and Woodward.

He attended the Catholic and the River of Life Church. He loved music, especially playing and singing his guitar. He also enjoyed fishing and growing his vegetable garden.

He is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Lois Mitchell of Woodward; two daughters: Jennifer Patterson of Mooreland, Julie Cope and husband Rodney of Seiling; one brother, Keith Mitchell and wife Dana; two sisters, Jennifer Kinnaird, Shelley Hammond and husband Marc; five grandchildren: Timothy Lieswald and wife Brittainy, Jayden Patterson, Keeli Cope, Jassidy Cope, Rayner Cope, and Rylan Cope; three great-grandchildren, Tayten Lieswald, Pacey Lieswald, and Preslynn Lieswald; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a son-in-law, Jason Patterson.
