Veryl Anita (Plumlee) Mills

Veryl Anita (Plumlee) Mills
March 25, 1935 ~ September 11, 2019

Veryl Mills passed away on September 11, 2019 at MD Anderson Cancer Center after a battle with leukemia.

Veryl Anita Plumlee was born March 25, 1935 in Childress, TX. She was the eldest of four children to Virgil and Eva Plumlee. She spent her early years living in the Borger-Phillips Texas area. While attending school she was active in the school chorale groups and graduated from Phillips High School as Salutatorian of her class in 1953. She was awarded a college scholarship by Phillips Petroleum Company and attended Abilene Christian College. She attained a degree in Elementary Education and graduated Summa Cum Laude in 1957. While at ACC she met the love of her life, Lloyd whom she married on Thanksgiving Day, November 28, 1957 in Abilene, TX. Her first year of teaching was in Abilene. They then moved to San Benito, TX where they both worked at the Sunny Glen Children's Home. After a year Lloyd and Veryl moved to a farm in Sheridan County, KS where Lloyd grew up. While living and farming there they raised their family and she taught in the elementary schools in Studley and then in Hoxie. In 1982, they moved to Enid, OK.

Veryl spent 35 of her adult years teaching and tutoring elementary aged children in Texas, Kansas and Oklahoma. During her years as a teacher, her students reaped the benefits of her ability to bring out the best in them. In 2016 they moved to Katy, TX to be closer to their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was dedicated to her family, and treasured the last two years being close to and loving on them. Three generations of her family are and will be avid readers due to the hours spent on her lap listening to her read to them. Not only did she share her love for reading with others, but spent her life involved with her church and community activities. She has been remembered by many for her shared faith and gifts of Bibles. She never met a stranger. She enjoyed singing and listening to the many spiritual songs that convey the comforting and inspiring message of the scriptures. She also enjoyed playing bridge online with friends around the world.

Veryl was preceded in death by her daughter, Vicki Mills; her parents, Virgil and Eva Plumlee and her siblings, Bobby Plumlee, Gary Plumlee, and Carolyn Kidd.

She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Lloyd Mills; her children Greg and wife Joyce Mills, and Alan and wife Lorie Mills; her grandchildren Kayla Mills Murray and husband Tim, Darren Mills, and Katy Mills Gamble and husband Taylor; her great-grandchildren Jaxson Mills, Declan Gamble and Adelaide Gamble; Brother- and Sister-in-laws; Nieces and Nephews; and family and friends that held her dear.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be given to MD Anderson Leukemia Center in memory of Veryl Mills.
