Gurlen Purge "Gus" Miller

November 3, 1954 ~ February 20, 2014

Gurlen "Gus" Purge Miller, age 59 of Ponca City, Oklahoma passed away in Antlers, Oklahoma on Thursday, February 20, 2014.

Memorial services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday at Sunset Baptist Church, 915 Greenwood Ave., Ponca City,Oklahoma. Brother Mich Dershem will officiate. Arrangements are entrusted to Palmer Marler Funeral Home, Cushing, Oklahoma.

Gus was born on November 3, 1954 in Mesa, Arizona to Dave Harland and Garnett (Hollan) Miller, one of thirteen children. They were taught to work hard while growing up, picking crops in the fields. Of course, with that many sibling there was never a dull moment. He attended school in Lookeba, Oklahoma, graduating with the class of 1974. Gus joined the U. S. Army, serving his country for four years. After returning from the service, he began working in the oilfield then moved to Hinton where he opened his own Mechanic Shop. Gus married and had two children, Steve and Shaunell. He lived in Hinton for ten years before moving to Ponca City. Gus worked for Atomic Services Inc. in Oklahoma City as an Inspector for Fire Safety. Gus met the love of his life Sharon Minnick seventeen years ago, they made their home in Ponca City, they were married on October 19, 2006 in Eureka Springs, Ar. Gus enjoyed fishing, watching the O.U. Sooners and Thunder Basketball. He liked tinkering in his shop. Gus loved spending time with family, especially his grandchildren.

Gus is survived by his wife Sharon of the home, son Steve Miller and wife Kimberly of Ft. Sill, Ok., daughters Shaunell Brown and husband Justin of Hinton, Shannon Lorg and husband Jamie of Blackwell, Shon Swopes of Sand Springs, Shalyn Morgan and husband Kenneth of Henryetta, brothers Leon Miller of Colony, Ok., Tommy Miller and wife Jeanne of Carthage, Mo., J.D. Miller and wife Laura of Panama, Ok., Michael Miller and wife Iona of Hydro., Johnny Miller and wife Pat of Gaffney, S.C., sisters Sue Jordan and husband Nick of Granby, Mo., Margo Lewis and husband Jimmy of Grove, Ok., grandchildren Zachery, Makenzie, Ashlyn and Reaghan, Mallori and Madisyn, Devin, Haley, Jamison and Jon, Ryan, Warren and Tori, Dalton, Wyatt and Hannah, and numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, mother-in-law Anna Bell Nelson, brothers Don Miller, Danny Miller and Melvin Miller, sisters Lavon McCullar and Mary Ferguson.
