Thank You For Your Service!

Joe Wallace McMakin

January 27, 1926 ~ September 8, 2004

In Ecclesiastes 3, the Word says…”To everything there is a season and a purpose under heaven. A time to be born…” Joe Wallace McMakin was born on January 27, 1926, in Denton, Texas, to Grover C. and Tott McMakin. “A time to die…” Joe’s home going was at 6:45 p.m. on Wednesday, September 8, 2004. He was 78 years old and resided in Shreveport, Louisiana.

“A time to plant…” Joe planted seeds of love in the hearts of all who knew him. He led the way to heaven, preceding the following members of his family: his loving wife of 52 years, Tincy McMakin; son, Charles Wallace “Wally” McMakin of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; son, Grover Cleveland McMakin II of Baton Rouge; daughter, Maconda Falting and husband Lutz of Shreveport; grandchildren, Emily and Dixon McMakin, both of Baton Rouge, Grover Cleveland McMakin III of Houston, Nickey Lee of Tulsa, Brandy Lee of McAllen, Texas, and Corey Lee of Shreveport; brother, Grover Staton McMakin and his wife, Betty McMakin of Boerne, Texas; sister-in-law, Tommy Sparks and her husband, Dr. Tom Sparks of Ardmore; brothers-in-law, M.F. Kirby of Lampasas, Texas, and John Yarbrough of Ardmore; numerous nieces and nephews, Jan and Tom Bouldin of Arlington, Texas, Bud and Itza Zachary of Houston, Diane Boland of Ardmore, Sally Southerland of Marietta, Kelly McMakin, Tom Sparks and wife Charlene of Fort Worth, Texas, Gary Sparks and wife Barbara of Edmond, Larry Sparks and wife Anette of Danville, California, Susan Watt and husband John of Eagle, Colorado, Frank Kirby, Steve Kirby and Joel Kirby.

His parents; and his two sisters, Mary Helen Zachary and Shirley Townsend, who were both of Marietta, preceded him in death.

“A time to weep…A time to mourn…” Joe will be missed by everyone so very much – but we will all have – A time to smile and a time to be happy as we celebrate Joe’s life and remember his many accomplishments. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church. He was a loyal alum of Classen High School in Oklahoma. Joe also earned master’s degrees from the University of Louisiana at Monroe and Louisiana Tech. He enjoyed his work in the field of education at River Oaks School in Monroe and Prairie View in Bastrop. As with many of his generation, Joe was extremely proud of his service to his country during World War II, serving in the U.S. Marine Corps in the South Pacific.

“A time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing…” Joe’s home going was celebrated Saturday, September 11. Friends and family visited at Mulhearn Funeral Home, Monroe, Louisiana, on Friday, September 10.

His service was held Saturday, September 11, at 10 a.m. at St. Paul’s Methodist Church, Monroe, with the Rev. Dick Humpheries officiating. Joe was buried at Forest Park Cemetery, St. Vincent Avenue, in Shreveport. A graveside service was held at Forest Park at 2 p.m., Saturday, September 11, with the Rev. Pat Day of the First United Methodist Church in Shreveport officiating.

“A time to mend…A time to speak…” Joe’s life spoke to us through his faith and trust in his heavenly Father. In lieu of flowers, it would have pleased Joe if you sent your love offerings to the Shreveport Fire Department in gratitude for their loyal help to him. Memorials may also be made to the Catholic High School Foundation, P.O. Box 65004, Baton Rouge, LA 70896.

We would like to thank everyone from the War Veterans Home in Monroe for their love and care during the last few months of Joe’s life.

Pallbearers were Dixon Abell, Donnie Laudenheimer, Mike Nelson, Burg Ransom, Bill Touchstone and John Van Veckhoven. Honorary pallbearers were Nelson D. Abell, Roy Johns, Paul Ransom, Dr. Wally Jones, Dr. Paxton Oliver, Coach Charlie Brown, J.B.
