Services for Otha Carr “Coot” McLaughlin, 90, were held at 10 a.m., Friday, February 22, at the First Baptist Church, Thackerville, with the Rev. Matthew Weathers and Robby Peyrot officiating. Interment was in the New Resthaven Cemetery, Gainesville, Texas.
Born March 1, 1917, at Thackerville, the daughter of Doc Henry and Jessie Pearl Hudson, Otha passed from this life into the presence of the Lord on February 20, 2008, in the North Texas Medical Center, Gainesville.
Otha attended schools in Decatur, Park Springs and Turkey Creek, Texas, graduating from Thackerville High School after moving back in the seventh grade. She was a “PK,” preacher’s kid, and endured several moves as a result. After returning to Thackerville, she met, fell in love with, and married Iven J. McLaughlin on December 27, 1941 in Ardmore. He preceded her in death on June 3, 1976. Mrs. McLaughlin was a homemaker and very active in First Baptist Church, Thackerville, teaching the Adult Women’s Sunday School Class for many years. Otha was a member of the Love County Home Demonstration Club. Also, in later years, she helped with the organization of Thackerville’s first Senior Citizens Center. “Coot,” as she was known by friends and family, was always tending to the needs of others.
Survivors include a son, Iven J. McLaughlin, Jr. and wife Deborah of Gainesville; two grandsons, Daniel Powell and wife, Shelly of Gainesville and Chad Trammell and fiancé, Bernadette Miller of Gainesville; granddaughter, Chastity Eugster and husband, Brent of Gainesville; eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Luna Langston of Marietta; and a host of nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Henry Hudson; and a great-grandson, Colton Powell.
Pallbearers were her nephews, Jim Langston, Dutch Langston, Eddie Langston, Jeff Langston, Dale Scivally and Danny Scivally.
