James K "Jim" Mayes, Jr.
September 19, 1932 ~ June 20, 2020

James "Jim" K. Mayes, Jr. passed away on Sunday, June 21, 2020 at the age of 87. He was born on Monday, September 19, 1932 to J. K. and Elsie Mayes in Okmulgee, OK.

He graduated from Okmulgee High School in 1950. After Jim graduated from high school, he joined the Army spending two years in Korea.

Upon returning home Jim enrolled at Oklahoma University. In 1953, he met Wanda Jean Barnes and they were married on August 20, 1954, moved to Norman, OK where they attended the University of Oklahoma. In 1963, their son was born in Oklahoma City where Jim was working for the IRS. He went back to school at OCU. He finished two years and earned his law degree. They moved to Muskogee for Jim to practice law. Later he and Steve Scherer were partners. He loved the law! Jim retired for two months (was not for him), then went to work for the Oklahoma Tax Commission as Assistant General Counsel. He worked 12 more years before he retired to live on the lake in Checotah, OK. Jim practiced law at home for several more years.

Jim enjoyed boating, skiing and fishing. Also, he was a big OU football fan. (not sure that he was not #1) and loved to work in the yard. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Checotah. He enjoyed the preacher, Wayne and his many friends.

Jim was preceded in death by his father and mother, J. K. and Elsie Mayes of Okmulgee, OK; and his sisters, Shirley Farley and Judy Mayes.

He is survived by his wife, Wanda of 66 years; his son, Kent Mayes of Checotah; his grandson, Brandt and his wife Sara, his great grandson, Preston Mayes of Fernandina, FL. Jim is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Jim was blessed with many friends; a very special friend, Steve Scherer of Muskogee, OK as well as all who loved and knew him. Love to friends and family, Karen Byars of Oklahoma City, Ronnie Gordon of Canyon, TX, his nieces, Kelly and Leslie Gordon of Canyon, TX, John & Mary Williams of Dallas, TX, Diana Youngman of Muskogee, OK and many more!

Jim's wish was to be cremated. There are no services planned.
