Shirley Mae (Thornton) Matthews, 68-year-old Salina resident, passed away Wednesday, January 22, 2025, at Hillcrest South in Tulsa. She was born May 13, 1956, in Claremore, Oklahoma to Bob “Junior” Cabe Thornton and Kathryn (Smith) West. Shirley married Dan Matthews on June 28, 1986. She worked at Harps Grocery in Salina for several years, and had worked in all departments of the store. Shirley was small in stature, but had a really big heart. She enjoyed fishing, sewing, liked to do pencil and pen art.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a son, and a brother-in-law Jim Hammil.
The family includes her husband Dan of the home, children, Angela Mae Starks of Salina, Glen O. Cleveland of Salina, granddaughters, Sadie Mae Starks and Gentry Lea Starks, sisters, Linda Benham, Trenda Hammil, brothers, James Thornton, Robert S. Thornton, Sr., nieces and nephews, Ronnie Moore (Karen) , Christina Graham (Colt), Josh Thornton (Lacy), Keely Thornton, John Garet Hammil, Katie Beth Hammil, Robert Thornton, Jr. (Samantha), great nieces and nephews, Corbin and Hannah Moore, Katelyn, Ivy, and Bailey Graham, Autumn Thornton, Evelyn, McKinley, Robin, Aiden, and Kynsli Thorton, numerous other relatives and many friends.
The graveside service will be held on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, on the family property at 1065 N 448, Salina, Oklahoma, at 2:00 p.m., Pastor Lorne Beck will officiate.
