Salina-
Gloria Lee Matthews, 89, of Salina, Oklahoma, passed away on
Wednesday, May 21, 2025, in Salina. She was born on August 4, 1935, in
Claremore, Oklahoma, to Herbert and Lola (McKenzie) Morrison. A dedicated
educator and grant writer, Gloria spent much of her life working for
Sequoyah High School, where she was passionate about helping students
succeed. Her love for learning and her deep care for others left a lasting
impression on all who knew her. Gloria found joy in the simple pleasures of
life—flowers, gardening, antique shopping, attending powwows, and spending
time with her beloved family and her dogs and cats. Gloria will be
remembered for her generous spirit, unwavering strength, and the love she
shared so freely with those around her.
She is survived by her son, Bernie Washee and wife Laura of Pryor, OK; daughters, Karen Simpson and husband Doug of Salina, OK, Arlene Harp and husband Steve of Westville, OK, and Deanie Washee and husband Ray Long, of Tulsa, OK; bonus sons, Wade Blevins of Jay, OK, John Mouse of Kenwood, OK, and Thorp Sine of Mounds, OK. Gloria also leaves behind a legacy of love through her 17 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild on the way. She was preceded in death by her parents, Herbert and Lola Morrison; her husband, Rayburne Washee; her grandson, Justin Simpson; and her bonus daughter, Judy Johnson.
A memorial visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, at Shipman’s Funeral Home in Pryor. A memorial service celebrating her life will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, also at Shipman’s Funeral Home with Rev. Choogie Kingfisher officiating.
