Al Jay "Cocklebur" Kester

Al Jay "Cocklebur" Kester
December 28, 1939 ~ July 26, 2018

Al Jay "Cocklebur" Kester, 78, of Bartlesville, passed away Thursday at his Bartlesville home.

Al Jay, the son of Amos and Evelyn "Mary" (Close) Kester, was born on Dec. 28, 1939, in Bartlesville. He grew up in the area, and graduated from Bartlesville High School in 1958. Al Jay was the ultimate entertainer: in the 1950s he was a Professional Rodeo Cowboy, and was also known for being a boxer, even participating in the Oklahoma Golden Gloves tournaments. On Feb. 2, 1975, Al Jay married the love of his life Solidad Lopez. They were blessed with 43 years of loving marriage.

Al Jay, along with his siblings, parents and uncle, ran the Log Cabin BBQ restaurant for over 20 years. He hosted many Sunday dinners at his house. If you could get through the door, he had a meal ready for you. Al Jay loved to tell jokes, always enjoyed a good laugh, and enjoyed reminiscing about his rodeo days and his Dad's bootlegging days. He was always jovial and he will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

Al Jay is survived by his loving wife of the home Solidad; two children, Brandy Kester of Bartlesville, Candra Sumpter and Mike of Oglesby; step daughter Josephine Lowe and Shane of Bartlesville; brother Vol Kester of Bartlesville; five grandchildren, Sierra Steeler, Jasmyne McCable, Tiphanni Pollard, Nathan Edwards, Trevor Edwards; five great grandchildren; niece Shannon Eckert and nephew Wade Kester. He is preceded in death by both parents, sister Farlin Blain Kester, and step son Carlos Lopez.

Visitation will be held on Monday from 2-8, and Tuesday 9-1 at the Davis Family Funeral Home – Walker Brown Chapel, 918-333-7665, 4201 Nowata Rd, Bartlesville.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 31, at the Davis Family Funeral Home – Walker Brown Chapel. Services are under the direction of Carter Davis and the Davis Family Funeral Home – Walker Brown Chapel. Online condolences and remembrances may be shared at www.DavisFamilyFuneralHome.com
