Evelyn Laveta (Vaughan) Kays

Evelyn Laveta (Vaughan) Kays
August 21, 1936 ~ June 14, 2022

Evelyn Laveta Kays, 85, of Thackerville, OK passed away on June 14, 2022, at Lake Country Nursing Center in Marietta, OK. Her journey in life began in Legate, OK on August 21, 1936, one of 14 children born to Sylvie I. (Conley) and Odis E.J. Vaughan.

Laveta was a lifelong area resident and attended school in Enville through 8th grade, Greenville through 11th and Marietta where she obtained her GED. She married the love of her life Thomas Jackson “T.J.” Kays on November 27, 1954, in Gainesville, TX. They made their home in Thackerville, OK. He preceded her in death on March 13, 2007.

Laveta’s caring and compassionate nature led her to become a Home Care Nurse. She enjoyed sewing and quilting. Seeing all the hard work and details that go into building a quilt brought her joy. Laveta was a part of the quilting club and travel club. Her greatest love was spending time with her family and friends.

Left behind to cherish her memory are her son, Tommy Wayne Kays and wife Theressa of Hobbs, NM; daughter, Donna Ruth Hicks and husband Dewey of Jimtown; brothers, Carl Vaughan of Ardmore, OK, Richard Vaughan of Ardmore, Lloyd Vaughan of Sherwood Shores, TX and Donald Vaughan of Lexington, OK; sister, Ellen Jane Creecy of Ardmore; grandchildren, Venus Ratliff of Roswell, NM, Cody Kays and Magan Kays both of Hobbs, Allen Hicks and wife Jennifer and Danny Hicks and wife Brandi, all of Marietta and Thomas Hicks of Jimtown; great-grandchildren, Seth Ford of Thackerville, Cody Hicks and Laney Hicks both of Marietta, Graicee Hicks, Kason Hicks, Tate Hicks, and Colton Hicks, all of Jimtown, and Adyn Kays and Ezekiel “E.J.” Kays, both of Hobbs; and great-great-grandchild, Atreus Ford of Thackerville.

In addition to her husband and parents, Laveta was preceded in death by her brothers, Fines Edward Vaughan, Haskell E.J. Vaughan, J.C. Vaughan, Allen R. Vaughan, and Melvin Wade Vaughan; and sisters, Joann Comer, Frances Leona Routh, and Ethel M. Vaughan.

Memorial service to celebrate Laveta’s life will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 9, 2022, at the Burneyville Baptist Church with Johnny Reed officiating and Pastor Rob Lee assisting. Arrangements have been entrusted to Flanagan-Watts Funeral Home in Marietta.

A keepsake video is available through the funeral home.
