Hazel Lavera (Rush) Hinds

Hazel Lavera (Rush) Hinds
July 3, 1926 ~ January 3, 2018

Hazel Lavera (Rush) Hinds, 91, Marion, went to be with the Lord at 8:05 a.m. on Wednesday, January 3, 2018, at Colonial Oaks Health Care Center, in Marion. She was born in Major County, Oklahoma, on July 3, 1926, to the late Nelson James Rush and Mary Elizabeth (Geist) Cross Rush.

Hazel married her beloved husband, Dr. Marvin Harold Hinds, and he survives.

A graduate of Marion College (IWU) with a major in Art and English, Hazel taught school in Kokomo, Indiana, Biloxi, Mississippi, and Valparaiso, Indiana.

As the children were growing, Hazel and Marvin moved from Texas to Marion, Indiana, to fulfill a call for Marvin to teach at Marion College and for Hazel to work in the Investment Department with The Wesleyan Church Headquarters. It was joy beyond expression!

Hazel was a member of College Wesleyan since 1973 and worked for the Wesleyan Investment Foundation from 1973 to 1987. In her leisure time, she loved to work in her garden. She cherished her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and watching her family grow.

In addition to her husband of 65 years, Marvin, Hazel is survived by son, David Charles (Karen) Hinds, Marion; daughter, Kay Linn (Jeff) Alter, Marion; sister-in-law, Ruth Hinds; nieces, Sharon Rose (Pat) Savage and Karon Kay Selm; great-nephews, Matthew (Rachel) and Kevin Selm; four grandchildren who brought much joy to the happy family, David Douglas Hinds, Charlotte, North Carolina, Jamie Linn (Johnny) Walker, Gas City, Jeffrey Frank (Priscilla) Alter, Marion, and Christina Marie (David) Tyler, Marion; great-grandchildren, Ofelia, Noble, Judah, and twins Eva and Ella; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Also preceding her in death were a sister, Geraldine L. Rush; brother, Donald Eugene Rush; five half-brothers and four half-sisters; and brother-in-law, Melvin Hinds.

A Celebration of Life Service was held for Hazel at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 6, 2018, at Needham Storey Wampner Funeral Service, North Chapel, Marion, IN. Pastors Steve DeNeff and Mick Simpkins officiated with burial following at Grant Memorial Park.

Memorial contributions may be directed to College Wesleyan Church Missions Fund.

Hazel exemplified Christ in her every word and action. She bound His Word to her heart and lived it. She quickly and quietly slipped into eternity with her Savior. Thank you for showing all of us what a life devoted to God looks like. You are truly irreplaceable.
