Ellen Eloise Hansen

Ellen Eloise Hansen
August 23, 1933 ~ December 5, 2011 (age 78)

The elegant Norse Matriarch Ellen Eloise Hansen went to be with her Savior on December 5, 2011 following a brief battle with cancer. She was born in Sloan, Iowa on August 23, 1933, the first of four children born to Harry Arthur Hansen and Edith Viola (Orcutt) Hansen.

Ellen always had a flair for drama, and was prone to creating it if at all possible. She most famously blew on a whistle as the school bus driver was crossing the railroad tracks sending the poor fellow in to near cardiac arrest, and she of course was put under house arrest and sentenced to a visit to the superintendents’ office.

At the tender age of 16 she was swept off her feet by Paul Warren Kueny. They were married April 15, 1950 and made their home on a small Iowa farm where they raised four children. After thirteen years as a farmers wife Ellen traded in her clod hoppers for deck shoes and life as a commercial fisherwoman. She and husband Ron Popovich built, owned, and operated a jig boat that fished the Pacific waters for albacore tuna. During Ellen’s years as a “high-liner”, or top producer, she developed many friendships that would last a lifetime. The work was physically challenging but no match for this tough Iowa farm girl who would ultimately fall in love with all things related to the sea. After hanging up her slicker, Ellen had a brief career as a realtor in the San Diego area where she had purchased and renovated a home that overlooked the bay. Her desire to care for others then drew her to become a Certified Nursing Assistant, allowing her to work privately in the homes of families with loved ones who had become ill.  The love of family then brought her to Oklahoma where she could spend time with her brother, son, daughter, and grandchildren. Ellen stayed active by working as a customer service representative for her son’s business, managing rental properties, being active in Republican Party politics, and spending time with family.

Ellen is preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, her sister Helen Yvonne (Hansen) Kinyon, her eldest daughter Laura Marie Kueny and her eldest son Warren Paul Kueny.

She is survived by her brothers, Harry Arthur Hansen and wife Chiquita and Bert Duane Hansen, son Bob Kueny and wife Denise, daughter Barbra Walker, eleven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, nephew Terry Kinyon and wife Pam, nieces Karen Clavin and husband Jerry, and Erin Lenhoff and husband Tony. Sis-Mom-Grandma will be sorely missed but the memories we share of her will bring smiles and laughter for generations to come. Ya, sure!!
