Hester Elizabeth Garrett

November 29, 1903 ~ July 07, 1987

Wakita – Hester Elizabeth Garrett, 83, a former resident of Wakita, died July 7 at her home on St. Eustatius, Netherlands Antilles. Services were conducted there.

She was born November 29, 1903, in Wakita to James Alexander and Lula Puckett Garrett. She graduated from Fairview high school, Wakita, and completed her education at Western Michigan College of Education. She earned a bachelor of arts degree from Battle Creek College, Battle Creek, Michigan, and a master of arts degree from Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois. She then taught physical education in several Michigan junior high schools before joining the American Red Cross in October 1943. She served with hospital units in England, France, Japan, Guam, the Philippines, Trieste, Germany, and the Panama Canal zone in addition to several state – side assignments. In 1968, she retired and made her home on St. Eustatius.

Survivors include two sisters, Elsie Glick, Lansing, Michigan, and Wilda Horning, Wakita.

She was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister.
