Jerral Lee Edwards

Jerral Lee Edwards
July 11, 1935 ~ Nov. 14, 2007

Jerral Lee Edwards, 72, a former long~time resident of Oildale passed away after a battle with cancer, November 14, 2007 at home with his wife and friends at his side in Lemoore, CA.

Born July 11, 1935 in Anadarko, Oklahoma to Ira Guy Patrick and Iris [Williams] Edwards, he was the youngest of eight children.

Moving to California in 1941 with his family, they resided in Moreno, where he worked side by side during the summer with his father at March Field during WW II.

He moved to the Bakersfield area in the 1950's where he graduated from East Bakersfield High in 1953.

Jerry worked for Weldon's Market in East Bakersfield, and continued his career with Safeway/Von's, most of which was at the Oildale stores on Manor and North Chester, retiring after 38 years in 1991.

Jerry knew no stranger and his friendliness with his longtime customers, co~employees and friends, would often find them running into each other on vacation, or where he would least expect, and would spend hours chatting and catching up on Bakersfield news.

Jerry served in the United States Army Reserve from 1957 to 1963, being honorably discharged at the rank of Sergeant. Jerry, his family and often foster children enjoyed fishing and camping trips to the Kern River, Lake Isabella, Bass and Shaver Lakes, Yosemite Bible Camp and Morro Bay with deep sea fishing trips with his father in~law, El Wilkerson, and good friends from work and church.

Jerry felt blessed to have lived the last fifteen years in Weed, CA, having special neighbors, Dave and Ann Davis and the Murphy's, enjoying the sound of the fresh mountain air blowing through the trees, and views of Mt. Shasta, Lake Shastina, salmon fishing on the upper Klammath River, early morning walks with his dog, Aria, and eating biscuits and gravy for breakfast made by Betty or at the HI~Lo Cafe.

A member of the Church of Christ since the age of 14, worshiping and serving as a Deacon at the Oildale Congregation. He traveled many times with the men of the congregation to Tijuana taking food, clothing, Christmas toys and baskets to support the Tijuana Church of Christ and Preachers School. While there, they enjoyed a trip to Ruben's Restaurant, watched Jai Alai Games, bullfights, shopped for blankets, pottery, picture frames and cases of hot peppers for gifts back home. Jerry later worshipped and remained very active at the Westside, Weed and Lemoore Congregations.

Jerry is survived by his wife of 49 years, Betty and son, Shawn, of Lemoore, CA, also many in~laws, nieces. nephews, cousins, close and genuinely special friends.

A very big Thank You to his relatives, neighbors, friends, doctors, nurses and members of various churches. Their prayers were answered, making his final year peaceful and pain free from the cancer.

Graveside services will be held Friday, November 23rd, 1:00 p.m., at Hillcrest Memorial Park, 9101 Kern Canyon Road, Bakersfield, CA.
