Uriel Yosef Yisrael, formerly known as Joseph William Duffey, passed away on September 9, 2020, due to COVID-19. He was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on February 22, 1952, at the same hospital where his mother was born and was delivered by the very same doctor. He was the son of John Thomas Duffey and Betty Ann Duffey (formerly Betty Ann Popp), both of Cincinnati. The family then moved to Michigan for a brief period, and then on to South Orange, New Jersey, where Joe attended Seton Hall Prep, graduating in 1970. He played football and baseball there and earned the nickname “Joltin’ Joe Duffey” due to his hitting prowess. He went on to college at Ohio University, earning a Bachelors’ Degree in English in 1975.
He resided in Ohio after graduation, working for the Red Cross and the Herman Falter Company in Columbus, Ohio. Joe relocated to Norman, Oklahoma in 2008. He worked for the University of Oklahoma and then enjoyed providing his own livery service. He loved life in Norman and remained there until his passing.
Uri loved music and taught himself to play the guitar, mandolin and banjo. He enjoyed the fellowship at his church, Lion and Lamb Ministries of Norman, and made many friends there. He loved watching baseball, and played basketball to keep in shape. He also enjoyed taking long walks and swimming laps at the Y four mornings a week.
Uri had a great sense of humor, loved comedy, and had an infectious laugh. He enjoyed the ocean and scuba diving, fishing, and visiting his relatives on the East Coast.
Uri was a kind and gentle soul, who was always the first to help out when someone needed it. He was one of those rare breeds who cared about others more than himself, and never wanted to be a burden on anyone.
Uri leaves behind many friends in Norman. He also had many friends and classmates from Ohio University, and loved his annual trips to Athens for their memorable Halloween weekend reunions.
Uri leaves behind four siblings, Elizabeth Breen of Union, New Jersey; Patricia Duffey of West Orange, New Jersey; Margaret Palombo of South Burlington, Vermont; and Thomas Duffey of Duxbury, Massachusetts.
The memorial service will be private.
