George Arthur Denham

George Arthur Denham
May 16, 1937 ~ March 24, 2017 (age 79)

George Arthur Denham died peacefully in his sleep at home on March 24 in Norman, Oklahoma. He was born in York, Pa, on May 16, 1937, to George H. and Charlotte (Lewers) Denham.

George and younger sisters Sandra and Marilyn grew up on a ranch outside Sapulpa. He attended Bluebell Country School and later graduated from Sapulpa High School just after turning 16. Always active in sports, he received a wrestling scholarship to the University of Oklahoma where he met and married Martha Kay Cook, and together they had three children. He earned a bachelor’s degree from OU, and later a master’s in psychology from Central State University (now UCO). George taught and coached wrestling at several Oklahoma City high schools before becoming a drug and alcohol counselor at Griffin Memorial State Hospital. George was a friend of Bill W.’s for 38 years, touched countless lives during this time and was an inspiration to many. In his younger days he rode motorcycles, kept snakes at home, wrestled (rassled) alligators and had a lifetime of legendary escapades. George was a proud member of NRA, enjoyed fishing, poker and daily EARLY morning walks. He loved living in the country, his many cats and watching the "critters". He and Carroll were married for 30 years and made many trips to Yellowstone National Park. "I can be packed and ready to go in 20 mins." - George. Each and every person he met was important to George. He is very much loved and will be deeply missed.

George was preceded in death by his parents and sister Sandra.

He is survived by his wife, Carroll, and her daughters Kimberly (Eric) Chidsey and Leslie Elfring; sister Marilyn (Dave) Lowry; children Elizabeth (J. Pat) Laurent, Ann (Harry) White, and Matt Denham; grandchildren Sarah, Jack, Rachel, Emily, Claire and Tallon; and nephew Cody; nieces Adrien and Dene; and great-grandsons Jackson and Landon.

Family and friends are invited to a celebration of George’s life Saturday, May 20, in Norman; please contact the family at saturdaymay20@gmail.com for details.
