Annie Josephine "Jo" (Calvert) Dawkins

Annie Josephine "Jo" (Calvert) Dawkins
May 10, 1922 ~ December 1, 2015 (age 93)

Annie Josephine (Jo) Dawkins, age 93, peacefully passed away of natural causes on December  1, 2015 at Sunset Estate Tecumseh.   Jo was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, friend, and faithful and devoted Christan.

Jo was born in Gaffney, South Carolina on May 10, 1922.  She was the eldest of eight children born to P.A. Calvert and Annie Burton Calvert.  In 1931, the family moved to Rockingham, North Carolina.  Next door was the boy who became her childhood sweetheart, the love of her life and husband of 63 years, Arthur F (Frank) Dawkins.  They were married on March 30, 1947, upon Frank's return as a pilot in the South Pacific during World War II.  Jo and Frank had two children, Frank, Jr., and Jane.  Jo was an active volunteer at their school and activities as well as volunteering and singing in the choir at East Rockingham Methodist Church.

In 1959, the family moved to Fort Worth, Texas, as Frank became a pilot for the Federal Aviation Administration.  A third child, Robert, was born here.  In 1961, the family moved to Norman, Oklahoma, and it became their home for the rest of their lives.

Jo loved to travel back to North Carolina every year to visit family and friends.  She continued to be an active volunteer at her children's schools and was an especially active volunteer and choir member at Goodrich Memorial Methodist Church.  Jo was also a long time volunteer at Norman Regional Hospital, serving one year as President of Volunteers.   Jo continued to volunteer at her Church and the hospital  until the age of 91 when she entered assisted living.

Jo is survived by three children, Frank, Jr., and his wife Suzanne of Alexandria, Virginia; Jane Linscott and her husband Jeff, of Bellingham, Washington; and Robert and his wife Sharon, of Norman, Oklahoma.  Jo loved her six grandchildren; Justin Dawkins and his wife Jen and Jimmy Dawkins of Norman, Jason Linscott and his wife Candis of Grand Prairie, Texas, Katie Linscott Crist and her husband Jake of Seattle, Washington, John Linscott of Bellingham, Washington, and Amy Dawkins of Mesa, Arizona.  She especially was pleased with her great grandchildren Liam, Penny, Josey, and Selah of Grand Praire, Texas.  She is also survived by her brother Heyward Calvert and his wife Katherine, sisters in law Elizabeth Dawkins and Edna Dawkins, and brother in law William Mathis, all of North Carolina. Jo was preceded in death by Dorothy Mathis, her sister and best friend of 91 years, on October 21, 2015.

The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thanks to Audrey Bartlett Saunders and the staff of Sunset Estates and Angelic Hospice of Shawnee especially Rochelle, Jill and Terry for their compassionate and loving care of our Mom.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jo's memory to the GC Gers Memorial Fund at Goodrich Memorial Church (PO Box 523 Norman, OK 73070), Norman Meals on Wheels (PO Box 1371 Norman, OK 73070) or the East Rockingham Methodist Church (490 Mill Road Rockingham, NC 28379).
