Dr. Helen J. (Sipe) Darks

Dr. Helen J. Darks
 ???? - May 29, 2016

Dr. Helen J. Darks, of Norman courageously passed this life on May 29, 2016 in Norman. Helen was born in Holdenville, Oklahoma, to Harry and Pearl Sipe..

Helen lived in Norman for over 50 years during which time she was a unique single-parent of the sixties, seeking a college education and career while raising two children who survive her. Helen attended Holdenville High School and the University of Oklahoma where she completed the curriculum of three degrees. Helen attained a bachelor of arts in history, a master of education in educational psychology, and in 1971 a doctorate in early childhood psychology.

Helen was the longtime director of OU Evaluation and Testing within Continuing Education and Public Service, now known as OU Outreach. Evaluation and Testing was considered the largest testing service provider in Oklahoma and aided elementary, secondary and collegiate educators in selecting, scoring and interpreting test scores. She was also the director of Student Union activities. In addition, Helen had a distinguished career as a psychologist in private practice for many years. She worked closely with school counselors and administrators, and her leadership was highly regarded by her colleagues in both capacities. Helen was also an accomplished entrepreneur owning and managing real estate in the Norman area for most of her adult life.

Helen enjoyed dining with family and friends and travel whenever her schedule would allow. Helen had many clients she counseled and would prioritize the need to be available and present in their lives until two weeks ago. She was a great advisor to many, including family members.

Helen was loved dearly by her family and friends and will be remembered for her vibrancy of live and her undying support and encouragement to all. Everyone who knew Helen admired her for her style and ageless beauty and her unique insight into living well. Her wisdom will be missed.

Helen was predeceased by her parents.

Helen is survived by her sister, Betty Whitton and her husband Darrel of Holdenville, her two children, son, Andrew Maxwell Darks and Barb Tadlock, of Norman, and daughter Harriet Darks Thomas, also of Norman, two grandchildren, Tristan Thomas Harper, and Tanner Thomas, and three great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her niece and nephews, Dana Whitton Waggoner, Gary Whitton and Steve Whitton.

Services will be Thursday, June 2, 2016, at 1:00 pm at the Havenbrook Chapel in Norman. The family will receive friends after the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations are preferred to be made to the American Diabetes Association in her memory.
