Elmo Vinton Christy

June 21, 1928 ~ December 18, 2004

Graveside services will be held at Hillcrest Memorial Park on Thursday, December 23, 2004, at 10:00 a.m. for Elmo Vinton Christy. He was born June 21, 1928 in Burbank, OK to George W. and Delena Cathrine Christy and died unexpectedly after surgery on December 18, 2004. Reverend Rob Songer from the Nazarene Church will officiate and Connie Bomar will sing.

In 1946 Elmo married Vera Hood and had one child, Dianna Kay. In 1951 he married Laveta M. Shaver in Cushing, OK and they had four children, Delena Ruth Smith, E. Keith Christy, Denise Everett and Holly Ann Christy.

He worked as a trucker driver for Burkey Creamery in Cushing, OK. He was a Korean Vet serving from 1951-53 and was a member of the American Legion Post 26 in Bakersfield.

He moved to Bakersfield and has lived at the same address for 40 years. During this time he worked for McMahans Furniture Store as a salesperson for over 35 years. Elmo loved people and has many friends in work, church, playing golf and bowling. He loved doing crossword puzzles.

Elmo was preceded in death by his father and mother, George W. and Delena Cathrine Christy; brothers and sisters, Alice Christy, Vida J. Duckworth and Gene C. Christy. His living relatives include: his wife, Laveta M. Christy, George W. and Bea Christy, Carl G. Christy, Don and Sandy Christy, Patty Ann and Jimmy Dinwiddie, Dianna and Bill Brown, Keith and Denise Christy, Delena and Billy Smith, Holly Christy, Denise and Tom Everett, Billy and Alicia Jackson, Michael and Jenine Christy, Jamie Christy, Lindsey Christy, Jeff and Kendra Riley, Brian and Korren Riley, Robert Riley, Paul McGee, Bob and Christy Knutson, Randy and Helen Brown, Richard and Bonnie Brown, Ryan and Kyle Smith, Cody, Ragan, Kayla, Daniel, Kaylee, Brandon, Carson, Rylee Elizabeth, Amber, Reagan, Kellen, Zackery, Sean and anxiously awaiting two more. He also has many nieces and nephews.

Elmo would want me to tell you that he loved his three dogs and his cat. He also enjoyed listening to Reverend Billy Graham and Reverend Charles Stanley on television. Elmo read his Bible daily and prayed. His favorite time was his Junior Sunday School Boys Class that he taught and Bus Ministry at Free Will Baptist Church in Bakersfield and his Visitation and Masters Mens Group at Cushing, OK Free Will Baptist Church.

We want to thank three preachers especially: Reverend Bob Ketchem for leading Elmo to the Lord and Reverend Claudie Hames for teaching the Bible and Reverend Rob Songer for officiating the services.

Thanks to our family and friends and loved ones that have crossed our path in this life. Thank you Billie Davis for help and love. In lieu of flowers, donations in Elmo Christys name can be made to the Jamison Childrens Center at 1010 Shalimar Drive in Bakersfield.

Elmo would say Ill see you all again when the gates of Heaven are opened. Thanks to our doctors and the Memorial Hospital staff: Dr. Young Park, Dr. Chen-Tsung Yeh, Dr. Javier Miro, Dr. Wong and many others that I dont know their names. Thank you for caring for my husband.

Thank you my husband for caring and loving me for 53 years. Goodbye for now, Ill see you in the morning.
