Charles Vernon Child

Oct. 2, 1937 ~ Oct. 27, 2005

A service will be at 2 p.m. at Kemp Baptist Church, Kemp , for Charles Vernon Child, 68, Hendrix, who passed away Thursday, Oct. 27, 2005, at his residence. Rev. Roger Speers will officiate.

He was born Oct. 2, 1937, in Ethel, Texas, to Robert and Ova Mae Cranfill Child. He married Barbara Wolsey Feb. 18, 1984, in Ethel. He was a barber for more than 30 years in Texas and Oklahoma. He worked for the Collinsville School System for 10 years as a maintenance director, bus driver and substitute teacher and also worked for the ground maintenance at Austin College for six years before retiring. He was an Endowed Member of the Hiram Masonic Lodge in Collinsville, Texas, and a member of the Order of Eastern Star No. 352 in Colbert and Kemp Baptist Church. He had lived in the Collinsville area for several years before moving to Hendrix in 1990.

He is preceded in death by his parents and son Charles V. Child Jr.

He is survived by his wife of the home; sons Buddy Child and wife Tiffany, Cresson, Texas, David Thetford and wife Laurie, Farmersville, Texas, Brent Thetford, Sherman, Texas; daughter Debra Smith and husband Myron, Durant; brother W.R. Child and wife Ruth, Ovella, Texas; grandchildren Courtney Pruner and husband Mark, Wichita Falls, Texas, Matt Cox, Durant, Jacob Thetford, Sherman, Jesse and Cameron Thetford, Claremore; and great-granddaughter Grace Pruner.

Burial will be at Macomb Cemetery , southeast of Whitesboro, Texas, with pallbearers J.D. Cline, Jim Sarder, Jerry Kizzan, Matt Cox, Miller Cranfill, Marc Pruner, Tom Farr and Jim Mulder. Honorary pallbearers will be Sam Waitman, Martin Winegar and members of the Austin College maintenance crew.

Family hour will be from 2-4 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Cunningham Funeral Home in Colbert is handling the arrangements.
