Deacon Richard Chamberlain, Reverend

September 20, 1931 ~ February 16, 2016

The Reverend Deacon Richard Chamberlain passed from this life on February 16. Richard was born in Hammond, Indiana on September 20, 1931. He married the former Bernadine Marie Grubbe on April 19, 1952 and enjoyed 64 years of a wonderful marriage blessed by God our Father.

Richard is survived by his wife Bernadine of the home, two daughters Mrs. Barbara (Allan) Chamberlain-Goodman of Topeka, Kansas and Mrs. Cheryl (Edward) Gomez of Wichita, Kansas and one son Mr. Richard (Geri) Chamberlain of Shawnee, Kansas. Richard was preceded in death by an infant son, Richard, Jr.

Richard served 20 years in the Marine Corps, retiring as a First Lieutenant. During his tours of duty, he received the Korean and Vietnam Service Medals. He also participated in Operation Greenhouse and received many other honors. After his military career, Richard served as the Chief Executive Officer for the Chamber of Commerce in West Plains, Missouri; Newton, Kansas; and Paris, Texas. He retired from Chamber of Commerce Management in 1994 after 27 years of community service. While in Chamber of Commerce management, he was awarded multiple honors, including the coveted title of Certified Chamber Executive. While living in Texas, Richard attended four and one half years of formation at the Catholic Formation Center at the University of Dallas. On June 27, 1992 he was ordained as the Deacon for Our Lady of Victory in Paris, Texas, and as a Chaplain at St. Joseph Catholic Hospital. In August 1996 Richard and his wife moved to Bartlesville, Oklahoma and he was assigned as the Deacon and Parish Administrator of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Dewey, Oklahoma. He retired from active ministry on July 31, 2003. In 2013 Richard and Bernie moved to Topeka, Kansas. Throughout his life, Richard maintained his strong commitment to God, family and country. Memorial contributions may be made to Right to Life.

Richard will lie in state after 2:00 P.M. Friday at Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. A prayer Vigil Service will begin at 7:00 P.M. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M. at Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Internment will follow in Mount Calvary cemetery.
