James K. Carter (79) went Home to Jesus Christ, his Lord and Savior, on May 16, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer and a rare strain of pneumonia. He was preceded in death by his Dad, Kenneth Carter, and his Mom, Agnes Marie Benton Carter.
Jim left behind a loving and grateful family: wife, Beverly; stepdaughter, Kimberlee Jones; and grandchildren, Zachary and Hannah; his sister, Jan Hullum and her husband, Lewis.
Jim loved his Lord and was a devoted and loving Watchman over his family. He was a good man with a kind heart, faithful and true to Beverly; a world of knowledge and encouragement for Kim; and a loving guide through life for Zach and Hannah.
Jim was appreciative, accepting, and faithful to his friends. He loved growing up in Shawnee and termed it "a really good time of his life." He spoke frequently of his Dad and Mom, extended family, and friends from childhood thru college in Shawnee. Jim was a member of St. Benedict's Church "the Church across the street" (where he was the 'on call' altar boy); and after grade school, attended St. Gregory's thru Junior College on a baseball scholarship; then transferred to Oklahoma Baptist University on a golf scholarship. While attending OBU, he received a draft notice for the Vietnam War; choosing instead, to enlist and serve his three-year tour of duty, then returned to OBU, where his scholarship eligibility was reinstated, and graduated with a Finance Degree. After college, he worked for the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency as a Bank Examiner for several years. Tired of traveling, he had been offered a position by a friend who owned a dealership in Midland/Odessa area to help run the dealership, which he did for a few years.
On a personal note from his wife Beverly:
Jim was living in the DFW area when we first met. He was a lease manager at a Toyota dealership and he happened to lease me a car in 1993. Our first date was Valentine's Day of that year and he courted me with chocolate roses, then we married on October 21, 1995. Ours was an endearing love, not always perfect, but always faithful and true. We didn't quarrel or argue, we disagreed (sometimes adamantly), but Jim always insisted on a 'goodnight kiss.' We never stayed disagreeable very long because we loved being with each other. "Love is patient, love is kind, … ." 1 Corinthians 13:4
James K was and will always be the "Love of my life." There are no words as to how I long to see his blue eyes and sweet smile just one more time.
Rest peacefully, My Love, it is well with your soul.
