Nellie Juanita Bowers, 98, longtime resident of Bartlesville, passed away in Jane Phillips Medical Center on Thursday, April 7, 2016.

She was born on November 2, 1917 in Kansas City, Missouri, the daughter of Frank Raymond Haupt and Mildred Loretta (Bergen) Haupt. Very early in life, Nellie and her family moved to the Bartlesville area where she has been a resident since that time.

Nellie attended school in Bartlesville, graduating from College High in 1937. She furthered her education by attending Tulsa University where she received an Associate's degree in piano pedagogy.

On August 29, 1939, Nellie and John Robert Bowers were married in Tulsa, Oklahoma at the home of her cousin, Bob Harris. They had four children: Karen, Kirk, Kathryn and Christa. After 55 years of marriage, Mr. Bowers preceded Nellie in death in 1994.

Nellie was a member of the First Christian Church in Bartlesville being in the first cradle roll. She was a piano teacher and a homemaker. She was active in several organizations, such as the Bartlesville Art Association, Mothers Club, Musical Research Society, and the Rock and Mineral Society. She enjoyed collecting rocks, playing the piano, singing and dancing and listening to music. Her friends and family looked to her in their decorating needs as she was quite a talented amateur decorator.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, and a daughter, Kathryn Louise Bowers.

Survivors include her children, Judith Karen Johnston and her husband, H. Dee, of Bartlesville, Bryan Kirk Bowers and his wife, Loretta L., of Peggs, Oklahoma, and Christa R. Thompson and her husband, W. Craig, of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; 10 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Nellie's memory may be sent to the Bartlesville Art Association, 201 S. Cherokee Ave., Bartlesville, OK 74003.

Services for Nellie will be held on Thursday, April 14, at 11:00 AM in the Arnold Moore & Neekamp chapel, 710 S. Dewey Ave. Rev. Kim Hames will officiate. Private family interment will follow the service.
