James Wendell Bookout, resident of Drumright, passed from this life on February 23, 2025 at his residence surrounded by his family.

Wendell was born in Shidler, Oklahoma on December 26, 1939 to the late Murel “Bookie” Bookout & Bertie (Bingham) Bookout. He grew up in the Shidler – Kaw City – Fairfax - & Ponca City area where he received his education. Before graduating High School, he joined the United States Army on February 12, 1957; having to get his parent’s consent since he was not of age and still in school. They gave their consent but his training for active duty was delayed until his completion of High School in 1958. He was honorably discharged from the United States Army Reserve on January 31, 1965.

In the meantime, he had met Emma Carolyn Brooks & they were united in marriage at Fairfax, Oklahoma on June 17, 1960. The family moved to Drumright in 1976 where he began his career as a local businessman and civic leader. He served 3 years as President of the Drumright Citizens Bank then purchased the Drumright Insurance Office and Tag Agency, which he ran until his retirement in 2017. He was very active in the community, serving on numerous boards most notably the Creek County & Drumright Industrial Authorities, the Drumright Chamber of Commerce, & Central Tech Foundation, just to name a few. He was the longtime President of the Drumright Memorial Hospital Foundation, taking a major roll in keeping our local hospital. He also served on the Drumright City Commission & was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church. His involvement and influence in the betterment of Drumright will be greatly missed. In his leisure time, he enjoyed woodworking, fishing, and playing golf. But most of all, he loved spending time with his friends & family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife: Carolyn, in 2021; & 2 Brothers: Donald Bookout & Marvin Bookout.

His remaining family includes his CHILDREN: Lori Todd & husband Mike of Cushing – Cam Bookout of Drumright – Tim Bookout & wife Mary of Drumright; Grandchildren: Bryan & wife Jessica – Kaylee & husband Tylar – Mollie & husband Nick – Tori & husband Dereck – Emily & husband Jeremy; 11 Great Grandchildren; 1 Brother: Carl Bookout & wife Naomi of Texas; PLUS several Nieces – Nephews – Cousins - & other relative.
