William (Bill) Rex Bohon, of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, died the morning of Wednesday, May 11th. He was 89 years old. Bill succumbed to injuries resulting from a fall at his home.
Bill was born to Lena and Noah Bohon on September 10th, 1926, in Enid, Oklahoma, where he grew up. As a boy, he mowed lawns, and delivered groceries on his bicycle to earn money, and he played the coronet in the school band.
Bill graduated high school during World War II, joined the Navy, and served on the U.S.S. Benner, a destroyer. After being discharged in 1946, he attended the University of Oklahoma, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in petroleum engineering.
After graduating, Bill took a job with the Phillips Petroleum Company, first working as a roustabout, a roughneck, and a pumper to gain field experience before starting as an engineer. After working for a year, he decided to go back to the University of Oklahoma to get a Master's of Science in petroleum engineering. While there, Bill's roommate introduced him to his cousin, Marilyn (Lyn) Mathis. Bill and Lyn were married on May 5th, 1950.
After earning his master's degree, Bill returned to the Phillips Petroleum Company and remained with them for his entire career. After first working in Midland, Texas, for several years, he was transferred to Bartlesville, which soon became "home". During his career with Phillips, he worked as the Manager of Reservoir Engineering, Manager of Alternate Energies Division, President of Phillips Coal Company, and finally as Manager of Corporate Budgeting. Bill retired from the Phillips Petroleum Company in 1983.
Bill was heavily involved with the Bartlesville community. He first worked on a committee to promote industrial development in Bartlesville, and later served with the Art Association. He also became intimately involved with the OK Mozart Festival. But the work of which he was the proudest was development of Elder Care. He served on the board of directors for twelve years and as president for eight. He was later recognized and honored for his years of service by having the medical wing of the new Elder Care building named the "W. R. Bohon Senior Health Clinic".
Bill was preceded in death by his much beloved wife, Lyn, and by his sister, Maribel Blasdel, of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. He is survived by Lyn's sister who he raised as his daughter, Meredith Chapman, of Redondo Beach, California, and her husband, Jack; by his son, Mark, of McKinney, Texas, and his wife, Jean; by his son, John, of Milburn, Oklahoma, and his spouse Choon Pang; by his five grandchildren, David of Killeen, Texas, John Paul of Austin, Texas, Brian of Brooklyn, New York, Laura of McKinney, Texas, and Ben of McKinney, Texas; and by his adopted granddaughter, Shamine Green, of Plano, Texas.
A memorial service for Bill will be held on Wednesday, June 8th, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 210 East 9th Street in Bartlesville; Father T. Lee Stephens will officiate. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that those who wish to do so make a memorial donation to Elder Care, 1223 Swan Drive, Bartlesville, Oklahoma, or to the charity of their choice.
