A memorial service for Jonathan Miles Bealer was held at Buena High School, Sierra Vista, Arizona on April 30.
Mr. Bealer was born November 12, 1946, in San Jose, California, the son of Maxine Rhoades Bealer and John L. Bealer, and died April 27, 1999. He lived in many states while growing up, including Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas and Florida.
Mr. Bealer started college at Reed College in Oregon, where he met his future wife, Virginia A. Caretto. He later graduated from the University of California at Santa Barbara and obtained a teaching certificate from San Jose State University. He earned a master’s of natural sciences degree from Arizona State University in 1979.
Mr. Bealer began his teaching career at Sierra Vista Junior High in 1971 with the intention of staying a few years and then teaching in other parts of the country, but he fell in love with the natural beauty of the area. He continued to teach biology at Buena High School, developing a curriculum entitled “Health Careers” which he taught in his biology classes. Mr. Bealer was named Teacher of the Year for the state of Arizona in 1998 and was one of the top three contenders in the nation competing for National Teacher of the Year award.
An accomplished musician, Mr. Bealer performed with the Four Mugs barber shop quartette and Meistersingers. His latest hobby was computers, and he served as computer coordinator for Buena High School. It will be for his unselfish dedication to the students of Sierra Vista Public Schools that Mr. Bealer will be most remembered. Over the years, many former students have communicated to him their appreciation for the fact that he not only taught them, he cared for them. Many went on to become professionals in the medical and environmental sciences fields.
He is survived by his mother, Maxine Bealer of Sierra Vista, Arizona; his wife Virginia Bealer of Hereford, Arizona; and a son and daughter, Ian Bealer and Glynis Bealer, also of Hereford. He is the nephew of Betty and Bill Wolfe of Marietta.
