Charles Lile "O’Malley" Austin

Charles Lile “O’Malley” Austin
April 5, 1923 ~ March 15, 2014

Charles Lile “O’Malley” Austin passed from this life on March 15, 2014 in Norman, OK. He was born on April 5, 1923 in Texarkana, Arkansas to Joseph Willis and Jessie Pearl (Smith) Austin. Charles met and married Rebecca Elizabeth “Mickey” Shriber in December 1953 in Frankfort, Germany.

Charles, who never met a stranger, will be remembered for his warm caring spirit. Charles loved exercising his mind by reading mysteries and historical books but did not want to be interrupted when watching the game show “Jeopardy”. His absolute favorite thing to do was sing, which he tried to do daily. He loved to sing hymns and a variety of other genres. He was also an avid Michigan State football and basketball fan. Charles proudly served his country in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged in 1960. In 2011, he was invited and had the pleasure of going on the “Honor Flight” to Washington DC for our military veterans.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Rebecca ”Mickey” Shriber Austin; his son-in-law, Walter Franklin Shaw; three brothers, W. Howard Austin, Jesse W. Austin, and W. Smith Austin; three sisters, Ever M. Forrest, Vivian Ritter, and Josephine A. Roosa; and niece, Kay Sharon Austin.

Survivors include his daughter, Karyl Austin Shaw; granddaughter Klynda Shaw and husband Kenneth Hardyman; two nieces, Linda Johnson and Jane Struckman and husband Fred; nephew, David Austin and wife Kathy; three great nieces, Rebecca Johnson, Millie Trent and husband Cory, and Kara Taylor and husband Dustin; four great nephews, Walter Struckman and wife Joy, Ernie Struckman and wife Katrina, DJ Austin, and Bill Johnson, Jr. and wife Michelle; and many loving extended family and friends.

Contributions may be made in honor of Charles Austin to the Music Department of McFarlin Memorial United Methodist Church, 419 S. University Blvd., Norman, OK 73069.

Memorial services will begin at 3:00 p.m., Friday, March 21, 2014 at McFarlin Memorial United Methodist Church, 419 South University Boulevard in Norman.

Arrangements for Charles and his family were placed in the care of the Vice Family at Havenbrook Funeral Home in Norman. Online condolences may be shared at www.HavenbrookFuneralHome.com.
