Odis Sherman Atchley, 78, of Edmond, passed away Sunday evening, January 7, 2001, with his loving wife Maxine by his side. Born September 27, 1923, in Wetumka, Oklahoma, Odis was the second to the oldest of 10 children of Earl and Beatrice Atchley. Odis proudly served in World War II in Germany. Married 49 years on January 6, Odis enjoyed his love of horses with his family and served as President of the Edmond Round-Up Club two terms where his greatest accomplishment was the organization and completion of the then new Round-Up Arena on Kelley. Retired as a homebuilder and developer in Edmond and Oklahoma City area after 30 years, he was also a member of the Central Home Builders Associationfor many years.
A loving father of five children, Odis is survived by his wife and children Wayne Atchley of Omaha, Nebraska, Gary Atchley of Edmond, Janice Pitchford of Guthrie, and Darrell Atchley of Oklahoma City. Preceded in death by his parents, his daughter Linda Atchley, brothers George Atchley, Bob Atchley and James Atchley, Odis is also survived by his sisters, Maxine Hoskins of Okeene, Sue Symes of Oklahoma City, Vernma Dean Daniels of Pecos, Texas, and Nadine Carter of Oklahoma City, and brothers C.E. Atchley of Paris, Arkansas and Jerry Atchley of Edmond. He also leaves behind his mother-in-law, Cleo Noe Lamson of Edmond, sister-in-law Helen Fitzwater of Edmond, nine grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
The family of Odis Atchley want to express their deepest appreciation to the staff and management of Golden Age Nursing Home, Driskoll House Assisted Living and Odyssey Hospice of Guthrie for making his last days so special. Always concerned for his dignity, comfort and quality of life, words cannot begin to express how much your love, tears, extra thoughtful gestures and continued compassion meant to all of us!
Services will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, January 10, 2001, at Memorial Chapel, formerly Baggerley Greenlawn (across the street from Memorial Park Cemetery) at 13313 N. Kelley in Oklahoma City, 755-1111. Donations may be made to the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation's study for Alzheimer's, 825 NE 13th Street, Oklahoma City, OK 73104.
