Vern Carl Akin

El Monte, California – Vern Carl Akin, 83, formerly of the Enid area, died Sunday of cancer.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday in the First United Methodist Church at El Monte, California, with burial there.

Akin was born July 20, 1897, near Sparksville, Kentucky, and came with his parents to Oklahoma at an early age. He received his high school education at Watonga. During World War I, he served in the United States Aviation Corps. In 1922 he graduated from the University of Oklahoma Law School, and practiced law at Okemah from 1922 to 1926. He and Elsie Marie Shaklee, a native of Waukomis, were married August 12, 1923, at Watonga.

The couple moved to California in 1926 where he became a member of the California Bar Association and was active in the practice of law.

A man of many interests, Akin was an aircraft pilot, owned and operated the Akin Goat Dairy and handled real estate in the El Monte area. In 1952, he became manager of El Monte – Los Angeles Airport, retiring in 1964.

Survivors include his wife, Marie; one son, Dean Howe, Diamond Bar, California; three daughters, Mary Helen Kelly, Palm Desert, California, Lois Anne Randles, Corcoran, California, and Linda Lou Hook, Torrance, California; seven grandchildren; seven great – grandchildren; and two great – great – grandchildren.

A Memorial has been established at First United Methodist Church in El Monte, California.
