Clay "Sunny" Akin

January, 14, 1936 ~ August 30, 2008

Clay "Sunny" Akin was born in Durant January, 14, 1936. He died in the Medical Center of Southeastern Oklahoma August 30, 2008.

In his 72 years, Clay attended Durant Public Schools, graduated from Purcell High School where he played football, served a tour in the US Army, worked oil fields as a roughneck and driller before joining Hughes Tool Company and becoming its top salesman in western states.

Clay and his wife Kathy were living in Montana with a new house and newly adopted infant son, Todd, when Clay became suddenly and seriously ill. The Mayo Clinic and Denver's Presbyterian Hospital never agreed on the cause although both ruled out tick fever which some of Clay's symptoms resembled. Presbyterian's final diagnosis was a disease so rare only one or two people in the United States would contract it. A series of strokes coupled with prescribed massive drug doses damaged Clay's speech, vision and coordination. After hospitalization and divorce, Clay returned to Durant to live with his parents, C.U. (Bus) Akin and Thelma Perkinson Akin, both now deceased. Clay spent his last years at Oakridge Nursing Home where he found friends and care.

He is survived by his son Todd (Brighton, CO) and sisters Janet Akin Overturf (Brighton, CO), Donna Akin Hammond (Round Rock, TX), Cecile Elkins Carter (Mead, OK).

Clay was a long time proud member and sometime officer of the Elks. His family thanks the Elks of the Durant Lodge who cared and helped him.

Funeral services, directed by Dalton-Holmes, are private for the family.
