Johnny Dean Akers

July 18, 1931 ~ June 13, 2016

Mr. Johnny Dean Akers, 84, of Bartlesville, died at 5:40 P.M. on Monday, June 13, 2016 at the Jane Phillips Medical Center.

Memorial services for Mr. Akers will be held at 2 P.M. on Thursday, June 16, 2016 at the First Baptist Church with Pastor James Biesiadecki and Dr. Bill Cook officiating. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of the Stumpff Funeral Home & Crematory.

A scholarship fund for mission trips and youth camps has been established at the First Baptist Church and those who wish may send their contributions to the Akers Family Scholarship Fund, c/o First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 1080, Bartlesville, Oklahoma, 74005.

Mr. Akers was born in Oklahoma City of July 18, 1931 the son of Joe Timothy Akers and Wilma E. (Marlin) Akers. He moved with his family to the Bartlesville area at the age of five and attended country schools and Bartlesville schools.

He entered the U.S. Army in August 1948 at the age of 17 and served in the Korean Conflict until receiving his Honorable Discharge in July of 1951.

Following his discharge, he returned to Bartlesville and then moved to Tulsa where he was employed with his sister and brother-in-law, June and Leo Waller at their Lot-A-Burger in Tulsa. He was married to JoAnn Hefner at the Springdale Baptist Church in Tulsa on July 20, 1952. They made their home in Tulsa until moving to Bartlesville September of 1958 and have made their home here since that time. On October 1, 1958 they opened the Lot-A-Burger in Bartlesville which has been in continuous operation.

Mr. Akers’ passion was flying and he held his private pilot’s license, commercial pilot’s license, was a licensed flight instructor and also had flown as a charter pilot. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church since 1973 where he had served as a Deacon, Sunday School teacher and had gone on 17 mission trips to Nicaragua. He was also a member of the American Legion, the Exchange Club and the Oldies and Goodies Car Club and restored and rebuilt Model A’s. He also loved to hunt, fish and golf. He was very close with his brothers and sisters and people from all walks of life and felt that everyone was unique.

Mr. Akers is survived by his wife, JoAnn Akers of Bartlesville, his three children, Janet B. Radebaugh and husband, Mendell of Bartlesville, Judy K. Gray and husband Gary of Havana, Kansas and Johnny Paul Akers and wife, Kelli of Bartlesville, two brothers, Jack D. Akers of Kaw City and Gene Akers of Enid, six grandchildren, Michelle Coke and husband Troy, Ryan McDonald, Chris Gray and wife Jennifer, Leslie Walker and husband Adam, Andrea Poole and husband Andrew and Kendall Miller and husband Adam, and eleven great grandchildren, Jake Coke, Paris McDonald, Jayme Guilfoyle, Jayce Guilfoyle, Logan Gray, Adaleigh Gray, Graysyn Gray and Cole Walker, Henry Poole, Everett Poole and Elaine Miller..

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Joe M. Akers and Jimmie Paul Akers and his sister, June Waller.
