Donald was born April 7, 1939, on Good Friday in Nowata County to parents Ethel Dick Smith and Hershel H. Smith. He was the youngest of five boys including Jay, Leroy, Jerry and Tom. Donald was a member of the Masonic Lodge and had received his 50-year pin.
He was a justice of the peace in Matfield Green, Kansas. He always said he never married anyone but did talk a few out of it.
Donald enjoyed pheasant hunting, fishing, baseball and bowling. He also made baby rings out of stainless-steel washers. He also enjoyed his pet crow, pet chicken, playing with marbles and selling milk from his own cow.
He worked all of his life. He had worked for Phillips 66 Kansas Turnpike, Lock and Electrical Shop, Phillips Station in Bartlesville, was a Gulf Station owner, Reda Pump TRW Camco Schlumberger and J and S Services.

Don was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers Jay, LeRoy and Jerry and two great grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife Betty, of the home; daughters Dianna Phelps and husband Jeff and Denise Margerum; stepdaughter Deborah Blackwell and husband Nollan; special nephew David Leslie Bradshaw and brother Tom Smith and Vicki Nett.
