A memorial service for John Blenford Chadwick, 85, of Stillwater, will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Zion Lutheran Church, Stillwater. Arrange-ments are by Brown-Dugger Funeral Home, Perry.

He was born Sept. 5, 1920, in Yates Center, Kan., to Charles Hanley and Alma Medearis Chadwick and died Thursday, March 2, 2006.

The family moved to Orlando in 1927, where he graduated from Orlando High School in 1939. He attended both the University of Central Oklahoma and Oklahoma State University.

In 1943, he received his commission as a first lieutenant in the 7th U.S. Army Air Corp and flew 23 combat missions over Japanese territory in the South Pacific as a B-24 bomber pilot. On one of his missions, he observed the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. He was honorably discharged in 1945 and received a number of decorations, including the Air Metal with Oak Leaf Clusters.

He married Annabel Henke Dec. 9, 1945, in Orlando, where they made their home. He operated Chadwick’s General Merchandise until 1958. He later served the Orlando-Mulhall community as a rural mail carrier for 27 years. He also worked part time in the pipeline division of Conoco Oil Co. for 36 years.

He was an elected member of Orlando school board and held memberships in Lions Club, Orlando fire board, American Legion and mental health board. He helped found the first Orlando Community Club and the water and sewer boards and received the Banker’s Award for Soil Conservation.

He was an active member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Orlando, later transferring to Christ Lutheran Church in Perry. In 2001, they moved to Stillwater and became members of Zion Lutheran Church.

He served as an officer at the Stillwater Senior Center and Country Club Village Home-owners Association.

Surviving are his wife, Annabel, of the home; one daughter, Joan Hubbard of Ponder, Texas; a son, John Jr. of New York City; one brother, Roscoe of Riverside, Calif.; two granddaughters; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers.
