Mary Ellis (Ashwood) Wozniak

Mary Ellis (Ashwood) Wozniak
July 20, 1920 ~ September 3, 2020

Her walk on this earth is over. Mary Ellis Ashwood Wozniak, 100 years old, of Muskogee, passed from this world Thursday, September 3, 2020

Mary was the daughter of Harry Monroe Ashwood and Mary Ellis Thompson Ashwood. Mary lived most of her life in Muskogee on her family's dairy farm south of town. She was the only girl in her family of nine children.

On September 5, 1942, Mary married Raymond John Wozniak. He was a soldier in the United States Army and was stationed in Germany and Japan, where Mary was able to join him. When she would tell her stories of living overseas, she always gave thanks to the American people for helping her see the world.

On February 1, 1944, Mary had her only daughter, Mary Ellis. When they returned to the states, it didn't take long for her to return to her home on the diary. She loved working and helping her brother Dick with the cattle.

Mary had many jobs throughout her life. She was a salesclerk at Hunt's Department Store, a postal clerk at a Muskogee drug store, volunteered at the VA Hospital, worked for the Muskogee County Election Board at her district's polling site, but being a caregiver to elderly ladies was her calling.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Mary Ellis Cookson; brothers, Tom, Dick, Harry, Bud, Joe, John, Bill and Jack; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mary is survived by her sister-in-law, Betty Malan Ashwood, grandchildren, Mary Garrett, Mechelle Messenger and Jimmie Bigby, several great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews too many to list.

Mary lived a long life, loving and being loved by all who knew her. Aunt Mary, your life was a blessing. Your memory is a treasure. You are loved beyond words and missed beyond measure.

Visitation will be at Grandview Baptist Church, 2:00 pm to 7:00 pm, Tuesday, September 8 and 10:00 am to 1:30 pm, Wednesday, September 9. A celebration of Mary's life will be held at the church 2:00 pm, Wednesday, September 9. John Ashwood will officiate the service. Interment will follow at the Greenhill Cemetery, Muskogee.

Checotah Funeral Service, Checotah, OK will direct the services.
Condolences may be left on the website: checotahfuneralservice.com.
