Funeral services for Bettye Jean Ashwood, 80, of Muskogee, Oklahoma, will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, March 12, 2010, at First United Methodist Church, Muskogee, with Pastor Rusty Williams officiating. Honorary pallbearers are members of the Friendship Sunday School Class. Burial will be in Greenhill Cemetery, Muskogee, under the direction of Lescher-Millsap Funeral Home of Muskogee.

Bettye was born April 25, 1929, in Muskogee, the daughter of Albert and Lucy Ann Drake Ballou. She died March 9, 2010, in Fort Smith, Arkansas. She married Thomas Lee Ashwood on Valentines Day, 1952, in Tulsa. An active member of Muskogee First United Methodist Church, she was president of the “Salty Seniors”.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and a brother, Albert.

Bettye was employed by Southwestern Bell Telephone Company in 1945 as an operator and retired in 1983 as supervisor of the Business Office. She loved to travel and as a tour guide for both Jefferson Tours and her own company, World Wide Tours Inc., visited all 50 states and 10 European countries in her lifetime. She was also active in the Muskogee Tourism Department and was a board member of the Eastern Oklahoma Development District Agency on Aging. She and her husband Tom initiated a program in the early 1980’s which allowed hearing impaired citizens in Muskogee to communicate with each other through teletype systems. As an event organizer for the 1996 Summer Olympics, she coordinated the Torch Run through Oklahoma to the final Olympic site in Atlanta.

Survivors include her beloved family: sons Thomas Michael and wife Nancy of Fort Smith; Albert and wife Cindy of Chandler, Oklahoma; daughter Jane Riddle and husband Frank of Muskogee; seven grandchildren: Brian Ashwood of Fort Smith; Dr. Amy Ashwood of Little Rock; Donald and Rachel Ashwood of Chandler; Sherman, Tommy and Madison Riddle of Muskogee, and a host of other relatives and friends.

The family will receive friends at Lescher-Millsap Funeral Home, 2801 Chandler Road, Muskogee on Thursday, March 11, 2010, from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Memorial gifts may be made to First United Methodist Church, 600 E. Okmulgee Ave., Muskogee, OK 74403, or to the Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum, P.O. Box 23, Oklahoma City, OK 73101.
