James Robert Smith was born in Prairie Grove, Arkansas in 1947 to Jim Smith and Earlene (Dillard) Smith.

He graduated from Stilwell High School in 1965.

James attended Northeastern State University for two semesters, where he admittedly, “majored in playing pitch.”

He soon enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving four years. James completed two tours of combat duty in Vietnam on the USS England and one combat tour with River Division 573. He served valiantly, earning a Purple Heart.

Upon honorable discharge, he trained as a Radiologic Technologist, working in several area hospitals.

He was able to get in a lot of fishing and camping in his retirement years.

James was a cheerfully dedicated patron of Tahlequah Public Schools, volunteering his time and talents.

James was preceded in death by his sister Alice, his parents, and grandparents.

He leaves behind his wife Betty and their sons Matthew (Leslie) and Aaron (Kim), and grandchildren Gavin and Emma
