Virgil Lagow, Muskogee resident, passed away on Sunday, July 26, 2020 in Muskogee, OK at the age of 95. He was born on Monday, November 17, 1924 in Okmulgee, OK. His parents were John and Cora (Robbins) Petree. His father passed away when he was very young. His mother remarried Charles E. Lagow who adopted him.
He grew up on a working farm and had to do chores before going to school. In 1943, Virgil graduated from Liberty Mounds High School. He was drafted into the United States Navy in May of 1943 and served faithfully in World War II.
After his time in the service, he went to Oklahoma State where Virgil earned a Master's Degree in Agronomy. He worked for the US Department of Agriculture with the soil conservation office.
He met and married Thelma West while working in Sayre, OK. They moved to Borger, TX and he went to work for Phillips Petroleum. They moved back to Okmulgee to work the family farm. Later, they moved to Muskogee, where he began a career as a Life Insurance Agent.
He loved to garden flowers and vegetables and he loved hunting and fishing. Virgil had his pilot's license and loved flying. Spending time with his grandchildren brough him great joy. He was known to always have Snickers in his pocket for his grandchildren.
Virgil was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Thelma F. Lagow; and his sister, Francis Irene Rainey.
He is lovingly survived by his daughter, Janet Sanders of Ft. Gibson, OK; his son, Virgil Lagow II of Muskogee, OK; his grandchildren, Dante J. Sanders II and his wife Becky of Howe, OK; Randy A. Sanders and his wife Shirl of Wagoner, OK; and Lauren W. Fleetwood of Muskogee, OK. Virgil is also survived by his great grandchildren, PFC Spencer R. Sanders, USMC of Wagoner, OK, 2nd LT Riley T. Sanders, USMC and his wife Kylie of 29 Palms, CA, Airman Sean C. Bliss USN and his wife Elizabeth, Joshua K. Night of Poteau, Carrissa L. Fleetwood and Tyler L. Fleetwood both of Muskogee, OK, and Londen C. Sanders of Howe, OK; his great -great grandchildren, Remington J. Knight of Poteau and Harper M. Sanders of 29 Palms, CA as well as numerous nieces, nephews, the extended family Billy Gene and Helen Sanders and a lifetime of friends.
Services celebrating the life of Virgil will be held at 1:00 PM on Monday, August 3, 2020 at Fort Gibson National Cemetery with Dr. Steve Rose officiating. Military Honors will be rendered by the United States Navy Funeral Honor Guard. Burial will follow under the personal direction of John Garrett.
