Merle Kating, 90, passed away on March 8, 2025, in Salina, Oklahoma.
Born on December 13, 1934, Merle lived a life of service, dedication, and faith.
A proud veteran, Merle served his country with honor for 33 years, including two
and a half years in Vietnam. During his time in the military, he worked in
supply and had the unique experience of issuing uniforms to soldiers, including
Elvis Presley as his platoon passed through. Following his military career,
Merle continued his service to the community by working as a mail carrier and
mail clerk for the U.S. Postal Service until his retirement. In his final days,
Merle made the most important decision of his life—accepting Jesus Christ as his
Lord and Savior. Surrounded by friends who loved and respected him, he found
peace in his faith and the promise of Heaven. Merle will be deeply missed by
those who knew him, but his legacy of service, kindness, and faith will live on.
No formal services will be held at this time. Merle will be laid to rest at the Fort Gibson National Cemetery in Fort Gibson, Oklahoma.
Merle is survived by his good friend, Susie Harsha of Pryor, Oklahoma; step - grandson, Christopher Lang of Coweta, Oklahoma; and many other relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, and daughter.
