Victor Dean Hughes

Aug. 22, 1947 ~ May 28, 2012

Victor Dean Hughes was born Aug. 22, 1947, at Hillcrest Hospital, in Tulsa, to Victor and Dolores Hughes (Scribner). He was 64 years old when he died after a gallant fight with cancer, Memorial Day, May 28, 2012, at his home in Fresno, Calif., with his children and grandchildren near.

He was a member of the First Christian Church in Sapulpa. Vic attended Sapulpa High School and graduated in 1965 . He went on to attend Central State College at Edmond, now the University of Central Oklahoma.

He served in the 173rd Airborne (Sky Soldier) Brigade Combat Team, as a member of a Cobra Assault Team, in Vietnam from 1967-'69. Vic was decorated with five medals: two purple hearts, two bronze stars and one oak leaf cluster. Vic loved spending time with his family. He especially enjoyed the times he spent with them on their trips, whether backpacking or snow skiing in the mountains, or spending time at the lake fishing, water skiing and camping.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sandy Kurth Hughes; and father, Victor Hughes.

He is survived by his mother, Dolores Hughes Scribner of Tahlequah; daughters, Vicky Nicole and husband Johnny Cano, of Fresno, Calif., and Jaymie and husband Denzil Wessels, of Los Gatos, Calif.; sister, Janis Hughes McCutcheon and husband Barry, of Houston; brother, Jim Hughes and Janice of Tulsa; and grandchildren, Shelby Cano, Broady Cano, Nadia Wessels and Danika Wessels. Vic also leaves nieces, nephews, and close relatives and friends who will miss him greatly.

Funeral and interment services for Victor Dean Hughes will be held at noon on Friday, June 22, at Fort Gibson National Cemetery in Fort Gibson, with Pastor Allen Nevel officiating.
