Ruth (Cross) Harrison
April 20, 1925 ~ October 16, 2008

Ruth Harrison of Ft. Gibson died Thursday morning, October 16th. Ruth was born April 20, 1925 in Okmulgee, OK to Charles and Lillian Cross.

As a young woman she worked as a switchboard operator for the telephone company in Okmulgee from 1943 - 1948.

She married John Harrison on March 25, 1948 in Ft. Smith, AR. As newlyweds they made their home in Stillwater while John completed his degree at Oklahoma A and M. John and Ruth moved to Ft. Gibson in 1949 when John started the Vocational Agriculture Program at Ft. Gibson High School.

Ruth was a member of Ft. Gibson First Baptist Church for many years and later Calvary Faith. Her love for the Lord was evident in her lifelong teaching and counseling of young people and adults. She was instrumental in organizing numerous Vacation Bible Schools in several towns in Eastern Oklahoma. Ruth loved cooking and taking care of her family. She was a wonderful example of a Christian wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She was loved and adored by her husband, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Ruth thoroughly enjoyed the many years God blessed her as she managed her fruits and vegetables stand. She took every opportunity to visit and witness to her customers of whom she dearly loved. So many were blessed by the life of Ruth Harrison.

Ruth was preceded in death by 2 brothers and 1 sister in childhood, her parents, Charles and Lillian Cross, and her grandson, Phillip Hicks.

She is survived by her husband, John Harrison of the home, 2 daughters, Linda Harrison of Oklahoma City and Carol Hicks and her husband Bill of Norman, 2 grandsons, Bill Hicks, Jr. and his wife Lori of Norman and Matt Hicks and his wife Rebecca of Broken Arrow, 1 granddaughter, Kelly Shank and her husband Andrew Shank of Norman, Phillip's wife Kristie Hicks of Moore, 4 great grandsons, Bill III and Tommy Hicks of Norman, Phillip's sons Caleb and Josh Hicks of Moore, 1 great granddaughter, Hope Shank of Norman, another great grandson, Andrew Shank, Jr. is due in December, her sister-in-law, Ann Morris of Poteau and brother-in-law, Robert Harrison and his wife Cordella of Blacksburg, Virginia, and many other loving family members and friends.

Funeral services for Ruth will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, October 20, 2008 at the First Baptist Church in Ft. Gibson with Reverend Glen Rowan and Reverend Don Reed officiating. Pallbearers will be Charles Sallee, Danny Whitworth, Dick Sheffield, David Sheffield, Wayne Osburn and Mike Moore. Honorary pallbearers will be Henry White, Lonnie Rowan, Preston Gray, Ralph Armstrong, John Moffitt, Dick Adkins and Bill Smith. Burial will be at Ft. Gibson National Cemetery under the direction of Millsap Funeral Service.
